Navratri Updates 2017 – Ghatasthapana Navratri Day #1

Navratri is one of the widely celebrated festivals in the Indian sub-continent and is dedicated to Goddess Durga. The literal meaning of ‘Navratri’ means nine days on which all the Hindus worship Maa Shakti. The tenth day is then Dussehra which is one of the most auspicious days in the Hindu calendar.

The Navratri is celebrated to commemorate the victory of Goddess Shakti over the Demon Mahishasura. According to the stories, Mahishasura claimed his victory over the underworld, the earth and the heavens. Blessed with a boon that no man can kill him, it was simply impossible to defeat Mahishasura. This made all devas to plead before the Lord Vishnu, Lord Shiva and Lord Bramha for help. They together with their divine powers gave life to Maa Durga and requested her to kill the demon.

Navratri 2016 – GHATSTHAPANA

The festival of Navratri starts with Ghatsthapana when a vessel filled with holy water is installed in each and every home symbolizing it as Goddess Shakti.

There are various ways to install this vessel which change based on the geographical locations and the traditions there. However, one of the most common and widely seen ways for Ghatstapana consists of installing the vessel or kalasha with holy water and mounted by a coconut in the center of a rectangular sand block. After the installation of Kalasha, the sand block is than seeded with grains.

It is believed that Goddess Shakti resides in the Kalasha for the nine days during Navratri. This entire installation is considered to be Maa Shakti for the next nine days and is worshipped by all. For the next nine days after the installation, the sand block is watered daily so that the grains are well grown till the ninth day. This grass is then used to worship Goddess Durga on the tenth day.

Following are some of the important things to be considered while performing the Ghatsthapana puja.
